Sankai Juku: “Meguri – Teeming Sea, Tranquil Land”
The first part of New National Theatre Tokyo’s “Butoh Today” series is a performance by Butoh dance company Sankai Juku. The company’s founder Ushio Amagatsu directs and choreographs his latest work in addition to designing the staging and costumes. Amagatsu’s work is highly regarded for its artistic strength and often deals with aspects of human nature and the themes of life and death. Following on from acclaimed performances in France, Brazil, Australia and Singapore, “Meguri – Teeming Sea, Tranquil Land” returns to Japan in November, and explores ideas of rotation and cycles from the circulation of water to the changing seasons and beyond.
