Sanja Matsuri 2020 *Postponed*

Markets & Festivals, Traditional Events

Rescheduled for Oct 16–18, 2020

A spectacular traditional Japanese festival with a wild and crazy reputation centered around Sensoji Temple and Asakusa Shrine. Sanja Matsuri is held over three days, with the main festivities taking place over the weekend, including dances by the shrine maidens, taiko drumming, traditional festival stalls and much more. This legendary matsuri is considered one of the three Great Festivals of Edo, and sees hundreds of teams of Ujiko (local neighborhood residents) parade heavily decorated mikoshi (portable shrines) through the streets, showing their passion and teamwork as they cheer loudly and endure their heavy burdens. The main attraction starts from noon on the Saturday. Expect high spirits, raw energy and very large crowds!
