This summer, New National Theatre Tokyo revives one of the most classic Japanese fairy tales in collaboration with choreographer Kaiji Moriyama. Ryugu: The Turtle Princess is based on the well-known folk story of Urashima Taro, a young and modest fisherman who ventures into the sea after rescuing a turtle. Taro is instantly captivated by the delightful underwater world, Dragon Palace and Princess Otohime. Three days into his stay, however, Taro wishes to return home against the princess’s dissapointment. As a parting gift, she hands him a mysterious box that she claims will protect him. What sort of destiny awaits the protagonist? And what is inside the box that the Otohime warns him not to open? The combination of vibrant stage design and mesmerizing ballet choreography will bring this much-loved children’s story to life.
