Oeshiki Festival

Ikegami Honmonji is said to be constructed on the spot where the founder of the Nichiren Buddhist sect passed away. Oeshiki is a festival in honor of Nichiren’s death and although the event is commemorated across Japan, Ikegami Honmonji is home to the most prestigious festival of them all. With a history dating back about 730 years, this festival is steeped in history and tradition, drawing crowds of more than 300,000 people annually. One of the highlights, the Mando (meaning 10,000 lights) event, features about 3,000 people carrying sacred lanterns from Ikegami station to the temple.
