NNT Drama Studio: After a Sewing Machine Jumped Out of Tomie’s Skirt
Established in 2005, NNT Drama Studio trains Japan’s next generation of theatre actors. This October, students who entered the programme in 2016 will present “After a Sewing Machine Jumped Out of Tomie’s Skirt,” written by Japanese playwright Miyoshi Juro. This is the first time the play will be staged since its premiere in 1951.
Set in postwar Japan, the play depicts the stormy life of Tomiko (aka Tomie) and her friends. After working as a prostitute, Tomie decides to cut all ties with this way of life and becomes a dressmaker. However, a newspaper journalist exposes her past and she is forced to job-hunt yet again, eventually finding work at a circus.
Performed in Japanese.
