Monozukuri — A Celebration of Japanese Artisanal Techniques
For three days this summer, Japan will present its finest and most skilled craftsmen in an annual event to show everything from traditional crafts to modern high tech innovations. Stage performances include live ice sculpture carving and flower arranging, and artisans will demonstrate their craft at booths across the venue.
There will also be a spinning top competition, as well as a special exhibition featuring traditional Japanese architectural techniques, which doesn’t use any metal work.
Dozens of try-it-yourself programs are available every day, ranging from kimono wearing to weaving, painting gold or silver lacquerware, making your own Japanese-style wind chime, hand sewing a border to a small tatami mat, and much, much more. Reservations, where possible, are recommended in advance to secure a spot on the day and time of your visit to the event. (Fees apply for some experiences.)
