Momokusu Iwata & Jack
World champion Tsugaru shamisen player and composer Momokusu Iwata is set to perform a concert in Tokyo. Joining him for the concert is fellow renowned shamisen player, Jack. Iwata, a native of Osaka, discovered the sound of Tsugaru shamisen at age 9 while watching an animation, “Naruto,” on TV, and and he soon began taking lessons. In 2012, he was admitted to Tokyo University of the Arts. In May 2017, Iwata won the Tsugaru Shamisen World Championship, held in Aomori Prefecture. Currently, Momokusu is actively playing in and out of the country with various artists: Tokyo futari, AOI – a trio of university alumni – and a duo with a saxophone player. He plays not only traditional folk songs, but also classic, jazz, rock, pops and dance music.
