The New National Theatre, Tokyo presents one of Toshio Hosokawa’s operas for the first time. Matsukaze is based on a classic Noh play of the same name for which Hosokawa composed a one-act, five-scene opera. Ilse Eerens and Charlotte Hellekant play the challenging roles of sisters Matsukaze and Murasame in this dark and elegant 80-minute production choreographed by Sasha Waltz and featuring an intricate installation set by Chiharu Shiota. Dance and voice are brought together through the phenomenal performances of the cast and Hosokawa’s music, which is conducted by David Robert Coleman and performed with the NNTT’s chorus.
