“Madama Butterfly”: NNTT’s Educational Program for High School Students
The New National Theatre Tokyo started its annual Educational Programme for High School Students in 1998 with the aim of giving young people the opportunity to experience world-class opera productions. Performances are presented as a full-length opera with live orchestral music.
This year, the theater presents the opera “Madama Butterfly,” composed by Giacomo Puccini. Set in Meiji-era Nagasaki, the opera tells the sad story of Lieutenant Pinkerton and his marriage of convenience to Madama Butterfly. Director Tamiya Kuriyama presents the relationship between the East and West as a clear global contrast, focusing on the drama that captures the polarity.
