Kyoko Hamaguchi: Do Gods Travel Lightly?

Art, Expos

Koki Arts presents Kyoko Hamaguchi’s first solo exhibition in Japan. This exhibition will showcase “God of the Day” as the main piece, an installation work that was exhibited at the Spring/Break Art Show in New York in 2018, along with new analog photography works.

Hamaguchi, interested in the migration of people and the circulation of things, incorporates elements of time and movement in her work. By utilizing her daily experiences and society’s systems in her artwork, familiar images are deconstructed and become anomalous. The title of the exhibition, “Do Gods Travel Lightly?,” suggests that the objects of faith (symbols of belonging) melting away and reappearing can be interpreted as a form of journey. The concept of “traveling lightly” is inspired by the overwhelming fluidity of New York, which Hamaguchi experienced after leaving Japan.
