This exhibition brings together around 30 of Kosai Hori’s works, from early paintings to recent compositions. It is held in conjunction with another Kosai Hori exhibition. In the retrospective, we can see not only the progress of the artist’s career but also of art history: His “early to mid-period paintings,” starting in the late 1970s, evidently follow the avant-garde of the decade prior. While the “recent” group of paintings, created from 2015 to 2019, see the total realization of his vision – a vast and “mysterious garden” of lines. His markings never seem to end, always overlapping, crossing, forming countless layers. Though his final compositions are dense and busy, they are also eerily peaceful.
