Kiba Square Log Rolling
The Kiba area in Koto-ku was known for its numerous lumberyards and warehouses that covered the area, all the way back from the Edo period up until the Showa period. Kiba’s name is derived from this once vital industry, as it literally means lumberyard.
Square log rolling is an art developed by workers throughout the years, originating from the practice of workers assembling rafts to float their goods down the river. Now it’s a popular autumn event, where brave souls show their log rolling skills and perform acrobatic feats like doing handstands on the top of ladders in the middle of water.
