Hokusai’s Animals

The Sumida Hokusai Museum’s latest special exhibition focuses on the legendary ukiyo-e master’s works featuring animals. Animals have always been a great inspiration to artists throughout numerous eras and cultures and Katsushika Hokusai was no exception. The renowned painter and printmaker excelled at conveying the distinct characteristics of his animal subjects. From realistic depictions, to conveying adorably cute and even mysterious and mythical creatures, this exhibition explores the many portrayals of animals by Hokusai and his pupils.

Hokusai fans should also be sure not to miss the large scale Hokusai Updated exhibition at the Mori Arts Centre Gallery until March 24.
