Gransta Tokyo & Aomori Nebuta Festival

Art, Traditional Events

August 3 marks the opening of Gransta Tokyo, the ekinaka shopping complex of Tokyo Station. The new ekinaka plaza will include an installation honoring the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri, a massive fire festival with equally massive lantern floats featuring kabuki actors, mythical figures and gods. This year, the festival was cancelled amid coronavirus concerns, so to recognize its cultural import, one such lantern – called a nebuta – depicting the wind god and thunder god (fujinraijin, 風神雷神) will hang in Gransta Tokyo. Organizers will also collect people’s photos of Aomori Prefecture and display them on digital signs in Square Zero, Tokyo Station’s first open-air space..
