Fudogaoka Fudoson Soganji Setsubun Festival

Traditional Events

Experience an exciting and ferocious setsubun festival at Soganji temple in Saitama. Fudogaoka Fudoson Soganji is a 400-year-old temple located in Kazo City, about one hour by car from central Tokyo. In addition to the typical mamemaki bean-throwing ritual, in the evening Soganji has its own unique way of expelling the bad spirits as three “demons” dash through the grounds brandishing various weapons including a giant burning torch. In addition to warding off evil and welcoming in good fortune, seeing the demons in the flesh – representing anger, avarice and sloth – is hoped to serve as reminder to make sure you keep on a noble path. The atmosphere is well worth the trip, especially if you think you have any extra strong bad vibes to shake off this year!
