In celebration of the New National Theatre, Tokyo’s 20th anniversary, this is a new production of Fidelio, Ludwig van Beethoven’s only opera. An emotional work containing themes of justice, love and freedom, the opera’s score was repeatedly amended by Beethoven for years following its debut in 1805. This production by NNTT is directed by Katarina Wagner, the great granddaughter of Richard Wagner, and conducted by Iimori Taijiro. Two of the world’s top opera singers, Stephen Gould and Ricarda Merbeth appear as Florestan and Leonore, and one of the greatest dramatic bass baritones of his generation, Michael Kuper-Radecky plays the role of Don Pizarro.
