Exotic x Modern: French Art Deco and Inspiration from Afar

To explore how French artists and designers adopted and interpreted ideas from distant cultures, the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum has organized a special exhibition of Art Deco style as seen in a wide range of arts and industry, including paintings, furniture, sculpture, jewelry and fashion. The museum, which is itself an Art Deco mansion built in 1933 for a member of the Japanese imperial family, provides the perfect setting for more than 80 works of French Art Deco that draw inspiration from Africa and Asia, most of which have never before been shown in Japan.
