Dream Yosakoi 2019

Dance, Markets & Festivals, Traditional Events

The 18th Dream Yosokoi Festival takes over the Odaiba area for three days of lively dancing and cheer with simultaneous offshoot events taking place in Akihabara, Marunouchi and at Tokyo Tower on the 3rd. Yosakoi is a unique style of dancing combining traditional Japanese moves with modern music – think somewhere between awa-odori and cheerleading. Teams compete to perform their choreographed routines in colorful historically inspired costumes, punctuating the dancing with energetic shouts, flag waving and hand percussion. This is the biggest Yosakoi event in Tokyo, previously featuring around 6,000 dancers and 900,000 spectators! The organizers continue their aim to spread Japanese culture beyond the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, with offshoot events planned in Singapore and New York.  The festival closes with an award ceremony and a finale performance from the winning team where audience participation is welcome!
