Dream Yosakoi 2018
The 17th Dream Yosokoi Festival takes over the Odaiba area for three days of lively dancing and cheer. Simultaneous offshoot events will also take place in Akihabara and Marunouchi on the 4th. Yosakoi is a unique style of dancing combining traditional Japanese moves with modern music – think somewhere between awa-odori and cheerleading. Teams compete to perform their choreographed routines in colorful historically inspired costumes, punctuating the dancing with energetic shouts, flag waving and hand percussion. This is the biggest Yosakoi event in Tokyo, last year featuring around 6,000 dancers and 900,000 spectators! The 2018 theme this year is ‘diversity and legacy’ looking to spread Japanese culture beyond the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, inclusive of all nationalities, disabilities and minorities. The festival closes with an award ceremony and a finale performance from the winning team where audience participation is welcome.
