Attendees at the Big Draw at Yoyogi Park

The Big Draw Tokyo 2019

Art

The Big Draw is the world’s largest drawing festival. Founded in the UK, it takes place every year and, since its launch in October 2000, this annual, international celebration of drawing, which brings people together under the banner, “drawing is a universal language,” takes place in over 25 countries, involves over 1,000 events and has encouraged over 4 million people back to the drawing board.

Tokyo-based, British artist Divya Marie Kato has been involved in cross-cultural art education projects in Japan for the past 13 years. In 2017, she launched Japan’s first Big Draw event. In 2018, she collaborated with UK-based artist Hilary Baker, and Ruskin Land, Bewdley in a simultaneous, bilateral UK-Japan art event across countries, cultures and time zones for which they were awarded the Big Draw Art & Societies award. And this year, she’s bringing The Big Draw festival to both Tokyo and Kyoto.
