Akabane Baka Festival
A fun-filled Japanese festival for ‘fools’ with good times guaranteed. Akabane Baka (Idiot) matsuri originally began as an April Fool’s tradition in the 1950s and over the years evolved into a two-day festival celebrating local spirit, bolstering local commerce and featuring all the usual festivities with added silly costumes. Expect street food, toy vendors, celebrity guests and ritual traditions including a mikoshi portable shrine carried through the streets. The local elementary school has scheduled kids’ entertainment and a marching band demonstration while the stage outside the station’s East exit is providing a jam-packed timetable of music and dance performances all weekend long. The festival highlight is the grand ‘idiot’ parade, which takes places from 12:00 on Sunday, when teams and individuals strut their stuff in colorful and gaudy costumes.
