Andon Ryokan is Tokyo's sole contemporary inn and winner of an architectural prize for its striking, glass facade exterior. At night, illuminations make the building resemble an andon, a traditional lantern. Throughout the ryokan you can find some of the owner's antiques on display. The rooms are comfortable and simple. Artist Mie Ishii's funky tile art adorns the walls of the ryokan's jacuzzi to add a special touch. Andon is located north of the touristy area of Asakusa, off the beaten path near the infamous Edo era red-light district Yoshiwara. Don't forget to catch a glimpse of the Tokyo skyline from the rooftop. Rates: ¥6,000 ~ ¥12,000 Address: 2-34-10 Nihonzutsumi, Taito Website: www.andon.co.jp Tel: 03-3873-8611

Reflecting a folksy aesthetic, local craftsmanship is on display at lifestyle store Classico, the purveyor of "antiques, clothes, crafts, and life." Here, you'll find an elegant mix of Japanese-inspired linens, clothing basics, ceramics, and stationery. This shop's authenticity sets it aside. Yanaka, the area around Classico, is a very charming neighborhood void of chain-stores and Tokyo's usual hustle and bustle. Wander through the little lanes to uncover all the gems, like SCAI the Bathhouse and CIBI. Typically, entering a store entails making a beeline for the clothing racks. For those who appreciate design, that is not the case at White Mountaineering. The brand's flagship in Shibuya is designed to feel like a hip mountain lodge and has an intricately and beautifully designed wooden floor that commands attention. White Mountaineering is a celebrated Japanese brand that focuses on Japanese-style fashionable outdoor wear. Its motto, “The field in which we wear clothes is all outdoors: One, design. Two, utility. Three, technology," is reflected in the clothing. The brand collaborates with the likes of Barbour and Addias and has had work showcased on the Milan and Paris runways.
