“Tokyo Bon 2020,” a new song and video produced by Cool Japan TV Inc., has gone viral, with over four million views in a single week. The music video stars Namewee, a top Asian artist, and Meu Ninomiya, winner of the Best New Actress award at the Asia International Film Festival. The video was choreographed and costumed by acclaimed Japanese classical dancer Ukon Takafuji.

The video has also been popular on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Weibo, and other platforms and has been featured on news programs in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines and more. Over 5,000 cover versions of “Tokyo Bon 2020” have been uploaded to video-sharing platforms.

Part of the reason for the video’s success is its clever use of “Japanglish,” which has earned comparisons to last year’s hit “PPAP.” But it also provides a look at traditional Japanese bon dance, one of the many aspects of Japanese culture Cool Japan TV Inc. is looking to highlight in the lead up to the 2020 Olympic Games.
