One of Kyoto’s best beloved hotels is sporting a new look for fall.

First opened in 1969, the Rihga Royal Hotel Kyoto has been recognized has long been recognized as one of the premier hotels in the city. Now thanks to a seven-month renovation, it is looking better than ever, and is providing even better service for its guests.

The extensive renovations, which began in February and ended in September, have been conducted under the concept of “Warm Contemporary Japanese,” a fusion of modern and traditional Kyoto design. It’s a design style that you can feel as soon as you walk into the entrance of the hotel, which features an elegantly louvered ceiling and a paved stone floor; meanwhile, the reception desk is fashioned from dramatically red lacquer. The renovations also include the creation of seven new rooms (bringing the total of rooms in the hotel to 489), and a new premium floor on the 9th floor called Chikurin no Kazaoto.

In addition, Rihga Royal Kyoto has been collaborating with mattress company Simmons to create an original line of mattresses. These exquisitely comfortable mattresses are available on floors 6 through 10, and in selected rooms on floors three to five. On the hotel’s three premium floors – Hanakoji on the 8th floor, Chikurin no Kazaoto on the 9th floor, and the Executive Floor on the 10th, selected rooms will be outfitted with Bluetooth speakers, Nespresso coffee makers, high quality Imabari towels, and custom nightwear made specifically for the hotel.

Restaurants haven’t been left out of the renovations either: all-day dining restaurant Kaza has added 90 more seats as well as new booth seats and three private rooms, while the French restaurant Top of Kyoto got an interior design makeover that gives the city’s only revolving restaurant a new look, featuring wood-block wall art.

With all of the recent changes, potential guests will be happy to know that some things haven’t changed. The Rihga Royal Hotel Kyoto is still just a seven-minute walk from Kyoto Station, and the hospitality that has helped make it a landmark hotel for decades, and will continue to do so for decades to come.
