Suu Kyi cautious on sanctions lift

Aung San Suu Kyi has given a cautious nod to John McCain on freezing sanctions on Myanmar.

The pro-democracy leader, who was recently elected into parliament following dramatic reforms in the country under long military rule, warned that the country could return to its past state.

Suu Kyi added that she will not oppose the limited-time freeze. Suu Kyi called for the military to firmly commit to changing its ways in order to complete the democratization process in the country.

The US considers Suu Kyi’s views critical to their decisions, especially in the lifting of decades-worth of sanctions. Reforms took place after recently elected President Thein Sein opened talks with Suu Kyi and ethnic rebels. Suu Kyi urged the freeing of political prisoners to show true democracy.
