Autotune Icons to Host Annual Awards in July

Heads up J-pop fans! Perfume, Hiroshima’s most famous electropop girl group have just been selected as hosts for MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2012.

The ‘Chocolate Disco’ singers, Ayano Ōmoto, Yuka Kashino and Ayaka Nishiwaki will perform a special live broadcast via USTREAM tonight to celebrate the news.

The group are famed for their squeaky auto-tuned pop and have come to symbolize the immensely popular Japanese music genre. The band struggled in obscurity for nearly a decade before being discovered and propelled to stardom by Capsule’s Yasutaka Nakata. Since then their eye-popping videos and iconic fashion style has helped the band gain fans from around the world.

Last year’s MTV Music Aid Japan was hosted by AKB48 and dedicated to post-earthquake recovery, with performances by big names such as Lady Gaga, Girls Generation, Exile and Tokio Hotel.

Pick up the next issue of Tokyo Weekender for further announcements on the nominees and performers at the annual star-studded event, which will take place in Chiba’s vast Makuhari Messe stadium in July.
