National Azabu supermarket in Hiroo announced it will close on October 31st after 49 years in business.

Owners of the supermarket have cited concerns about the safety of the aging building, particularly after the March 11 earthquake.

“After close to fifty years serving the expat and Japanese community, a decision has been made regarding the future of National Azabu,” said store manager Dale Toriumi.

“Due to the age of the current building, regretfully we must announce that effective Monday October 31st 2011, we will close down and be on hiatus until further notice.”

“Our goal is to open again, in time for our 50th anniversary in 2012.”

National Azabu has been a long time sponsor and supporter of Tokyo Weekender and will be sadly missed.
