The Tokyo art world has valiantly struggled to build a meaningful art collecting culture in Japan over the past five years, but the signs aren’t that encouraging, with Taiwanese and Chinese collectors showing more interest than the locals. One bright spot in the attempt to nurish the market is Tokyo Wonder Site’s “Wonder Seeds” exhibition of art works by recent art school graduates. Now in it’s fourth year, you need to get to Wonder Site’s Shibuya location early, as the best pieces go fast and for a steal — most are priced between ¥20,000-¥40,000. If you have a blank wall and some spare change, head down and take a chance on a newcomer. If you are lucky, you may end up with the next Yoko Ono or Takashi Murakami on your hands.
