Collaboration albums often sound like a good idea in theory but end up in disaster. Nas and Damian Marley’s recently released “Distant Relatives” is an unusual exception, fortunately. The rapper and reggae star collaborated before on tracks such as “Road to Zion”, laying the groundwork for an LP that has been hailed as “nothing short of a revelation” by Vibe magazine. The album tackles the continuing troubles of the African continent, a subject that allows the two singers to finally bring together the influential Jamaican musical genre with its younger US relative on inspiring and thoughtful tracks such as “Strong Will Continue” and “Tribes At War”. Getting to see the two legends live in Tokyo at the same time justifies the steep ¥8,500 entry.
