A showcase of old architecture, Shanghai’s Old Town is located to the southeast of the city centre and is a hive of activity with ancient temples, eateries, souvenir shops, and business. Known to locals as Nan Shi, the Old Town, is the most traditionally Chinese area of Shanghai and was once surrounded by a city wall. There are a number of sights well worth visiting including the classic Southern Chinese Yu Garden, the Temple of the Town Gods, Dongtai Road Antique Market (great for Mao memorabilia), and Flower, Bird, Fish and Insect Market (great if you want to have your own pet cricket), just to name but a few.
I loved the hustle and bustle of life in this part of town and will definitely be returning in the coming days to revisit Shanghai’s “oldest vegetarian restaurant” (delicious Shanghai noodles and stuffed tofu) and a traditional Chinese reflexology foot treatment… stay tuned.
