Anyone in need of an exquisite, pampered dining experience should immediately book a table at Piacere in the Shangri-La Hotel, where no detail is spared in providing guests with a truly memorable meal. With the backdrop of sweeping views of the Imperial Garden and Marunouchi, diners can choose between the elegant main dining room, where an array of set menus or à la carte dining is available, or the sommelier’s suite, the cozy adjacent room where the menu is carefully selected to match Piacere’s impressive collection of over 500 wines.

Piacere is Italian for ‘pleasure,’ and the restaurant strives to deliver just that to its guests, with exquisitely prepared contemporary Italian cuisine that incorporates Japanese ingredients and flavors. Set menus include a well-priced ¥10,000 ‘Benvenuto’ course, which includes the diner’s selection of an appetizer, two pasta courses, a main course and dessert; as well as the chef’s signature ‘Il Mio Pensiero’ menu. Until the end of August, a special champagne menu is also available—guests choose four champagnes or spumantes and the chef prepares a unique menu of four courses to match each selection. A special black truffle menu is also available this summer—each course incorporates generous amounts of earthy, fragrant tartufo nero.

The first course of scallop topped with sweetbread, speck and walnut provided a deliciously complex, well-balanced mouthful of flavors, enhanced by a horseradish emulsion. All of Piacere’s pastas are made in-house and cooked to al dente perfection. A Sienna style pici, a thick, spaghetti-shaped pasta, was delicately wrapped in a subtle fennel cream sauce and topped with a bonito ragout. One of the chef’s specialties is a Florence-style tagliolini with veal tripe in fresh scampi sauce. Each bite of the luxurious pasta delighted my palate with its rich, complex, thoughtfully prepared flavors, and a sprinkling of mint provided a surprising burst of freshness. The main course of Japanese beef tenderloin in bone marrow and red wine sauce was perfectly prepared to medium rare, well-marbled and complemented by stuffed cipollini onions.

Piacere takes fine Italian dining to the next level—whether for a power business or leisurely ladies’ lunch, romantic evening for two, or simply a well-deserved delicious meal, Piacere’s impeccable service and cuisine provide a memorable experience.
