The primary residence of the Emperor of Japan since 1888, the Imperial Palace is one of Tokyo’s most iconic structures. Naturally, it’s an extraordinarily popular tourist spot. Most of the grounds are off-limits for tourists, but it’s possible to see some of the palace on organized tours – they are held at 10am and 1:30pm most days. Make a reservation ahead of time or drop by 30 minutes beforehand; if spaces are open, you’ll be able to join in. Even if you’re not in the mood for an organized tour, a stroll around the complex is highly recommended.
