Hokkaido International School
Hokkaido International School is a private, coeducational day/boarding school offering a Western-style education from pre-school through high school for students of all nationalities. English is the language of instruction. The school has an enrollment of 190, with 90 students in the secondary school and 12 in the graduating class of 2012. Students represent 30 different nationalities. Hokkaido International School was founded in 1958 and is the only accredited international school on the island of Hokkaido. HIS started a second, elementary school in the town of Niseko in 2012.
At the elementary level the core of the curriculum is defined by the International Primary Curriculum. The middle school follows the International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC). At the high school level, HIS offers a Western-style, college-preparatory curriculum culminating in AP offerings in Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, European History, US History, Comparative Government, Studio Art, English Language and Literature, and Japanese. From 2012-2013 HIS is offering outdoor education as an option in its high school program.
The HIS school year is 180 days long and is divided into semesters. Report cards are distributed twice yearly. The use of final exams/projects is an option for the teacher but is not required. From 2012-2013 High School is grades 9-12. Middle School is grades 6-8.
HIS supports and promotes numerous activities outside the classroom that are rewarding, educational, and fun for our students (parents and teachers, too!). Extracurricular activity offerings at HIS provide students with the opportunities to accomplish to a greater degree the educational outcomes, or TADs (Transdisciplinary Skills and Dispositions), of the school’s curriculum.
The school building occupies 4 floors. Fourteen classrooms, a 10,000-volume library, science and computer labs, and rooms for art and music occupy the 2nd and 3rd floors. The gymnasium/stage and training room are located on the top floor. The ground floor contains classrooms for preschool and kindergarten and features the multipurpose area, a conference room, a kitchen, a staff room, and administrative offices. Next to the school building, there is a dormitory to accommodate 20 students from outside Sapporo.
