Yusuke Asai uses natural materials to create his art. Not “natural,” as in organic, non-toxic, artisanal paints or whatnot: “natural” as in actual soil, branches and groundwater. The approach to create his “mud paintings” comes from a desire to connect with the fruits and richness of life. His work has attracted much attention, which the artist has turned into successful exhibitions at Houston’s Rice University Art Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo and the Hakone Open-Air Museum, and other galleries.
