The ski slopes aren’t the only reason to head up to Hokkaido this month as Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival kicks off for its 25th year.
The festival sees some of Japan’s more out-there and alternative filmmakers descend on the tiny town of Yubari to bring five days of cinema madness to the snow covered streets. With offerings mostly of the horror, sci-fi, sex and violence variety and directors ranging from established talents to ambitious first timers the program is a real mixed bag, but there’s always a treat or two in store. This years Opening Film is the Ryuhei Matusda starring, Matsuo Suzuki directed, “A Farewell To Jinu” while the Closing Film is star-packed Hollywood musical “Into the Woods.” There’s a host of Oscar contenders on offer with ”The Imitation Game,” “The Theory of Everything” and “Birdman” present but it’s the Japanese stuff, all English subtitled, that’s really worth catching.
Yubari is easily reachable from Sapporo. It’s about an hour and a half train ride away, making for a fantastic experience well worth squeezing into any skiing itinerary.
