The 2014 edition of this annual photography contest will be just as distressing and poignant as usual, featuring many of the year’s top stories, but also lesser known issues. The exhibition of photos—selected from more than 103,000 pictures taken by nearly 6,000 photojournalists and documentary photographers from 132 countries—tours 100 locations in 45 countries and is in Tokyo between June 7 (Sat) and August 3 (Sun). This year’s first prize was awarded to National Geographic photographer John Stanmeyer, who captured an unforgettable image of African migrants on the shore of Djibouti city at night, raising their phones in an attempt to capture a cheap signal from neighboring Somalia, in order to reach their relatives.
