You might be familiar with the image by photojournalist Warren Richardson of a Syrian refugee passing a child under a row of barbed wire. This powerful photo and other winning images from the 59th World Press Photo Contest make up the World Press Photo 16 exhibition. Selected from 82,951 photos shot by 5,775 photographers from 128 countries, the exhibit highlights the importance of photojournalism as an effective form of visual storytelling. For over 60 years, the organization has encouraged the highest standards in photojournalism, and the resulting archive is a record of more than half a century of human history.
