The late 19th century was a time of great change in Japan. As the Edo Period gave way to the Meiji Era, the traditional found itself being subverted by the modern. This upheaval can be seen in the artwork of the time as society’s growing interest in photography became incorporated into ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Witness the modernization of Japan through the ukiyo-e, paintings and photography of this rich period in history.
