When: 28/02/16: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Where: Tokyo Big Sight, 3-11-1 Ariake
Starting in Shinjuku’s business district and finishing at Odaiba’s Tokyo Big Sight, the annual Tokyo Marathon offers the city’s most dedicated runners 42 grueling kilometers to pit themselves against. Traversing the city, the course takes in the temples of Asakusa, Tokyo Sky Tree, the Emperor’s Palace and Tokyo Tower. While entry has closed for runners it’s still fun—and far easier—to take in the spectacle of challengers, many in colorful costumes, sweating it out on the streets. Thousands take part and even more line the road offering cries of ‘Gambatte!’ and ‘Fight!’ as encouragement, while many helpful onlookers hand out energy-boosting sweets and drinks. You can see the runners cross the finishing line at Big Sight, but many other parts of the city will see participants passing through.
It is not just the 36,000 chosen runners but the 10,000 volunteers, over 1,720,000 crowds cheering, numerous supporting sponsors and many others that come together as one to make it happen.
