Glitzy annual short film event, Short Shorts Film Festival and Asia 2015 (SSFF & ASIA), will be running for almost two weeks in locations around Tokyo and in its own dedicated cinema, the Brillia Short Shorts Theater, in Yokohama. The festival was started by actor Bessho Tetsuya as a way to exhibit and promote short films in Japan. Now in its 17th year, it is showing more than 200 films from around the world across a range of categories, including International, Asia International and Japan, CG Animation and Music Shorts.
The shorts are collected into groups of around 5 for each screening and, best of all, tickets are free with a reservation. Short Shorts is the biggest short film festival in Asia and is the only Japanese film festival accredited as an official qualifier of short films for the Academy Awards. The quality is pretty high and there’s always a major star or two featured in some of the entries; this year you can catch Kirsten Dunst, Richard Madden (“Game of Thrones”), and upcoming Star Wars VII actress Daisy Ridley.
