Kondō Isami is the famed leader of the Shinsengumi—Japan’s true “last samurai.” This year marks the One Hundred Forty-Eighth Anniversary Memorial of Kondō Isami’s death at the hands of imperial authorities. Headed by Jutoku-ji temple, members of the Buzan Order of Shingon Buddhism with will perform a memorial service for both Kondō Isami and for the warriors of the Shinsengumi just outside of JR Itabashi Station’s west exit. This is a rare opportunity to experience an authentic Buddhist ritual complete with chanting and a Japanese drum performance. The Buddhist ceremony begins at 11:00 and will be followed by comments from the living descendents of the members of the Shinsengumi. Perfect for those interested in Buddhism or Japan’s samurai history.
