This once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience traditional Japanese comedy – being performed entirely in English – is one way to start 2016 off! Shinoharu Tatekawa is a seasoned rakugo performer, having been a veteran comedian in Japan for several years, performing his act for TV, stage, and audiences across the country. He had a go at it already, having successfully done his first English show in September. The subsequent demand has lead him to organize an even bigger show, expecting over 200 guests, this coming January.
Rakugo is a form of entertainment that has evolved little since its bloom during the Edo period; comedians have entertained the Imperial Family, influenced media, and been a staple of Japanese live art. Much like a comedy stage act in the West, a single performer remains on stage for the duration of the show, using little to no props, only verbal humor. Usually, Rakugo involves the telling of a much larger story, and often means the performer will act as several characters at once, distinguishing them through voice or head tilts.
Change up your nightly routine and learn a bit about live Japanese comedy while sharing a chuckle with Shinoharu!
