Southeast Asia celebrates the New Year by launching thousands of lanterns into the evening air, sending good wishes towards the heavens. Usually reserved for Thailand and Taiwan skies, Japan is getting a sample of the famed lantern show just before Valentine weekend. Set out in Chofu area of West Tokyo at the banks of Tama river, the area is wide and open – ideal for launching lanterns (lit up with LED lights).
Arrive a bit early and browse some of the sponsored booths and receive some discounts for the show. The fee goes toward your own lantern and funding the planning of the event. Organizers encourage cleaning up to protect the environment and reducing any risks to the area. Experience the romance and lantern-lighting from Disney’s “Tangled,” and all of those wanderlust travel photos of Asia.
How much: ¥3500 (¥500 discount available for “sharing” the Facebook event page)
