Punch Brothers is Chris Thile’s current band. You may know Thile from the progressive bluegrass trio Nickel Creek, who have been at the forefront of the genre for the last 25 years. Punch Brothers is a super group of bluegrass all-stars, featuring Thile on mandolin, Gabe Witcher on fiddle, Paul Kowert on bass, Chris Eldridge on guitar and Noam Pickelny on banjo, but their music isn’t strictly bluegrass. They have been described as “American country-classical chamber music” and as having “bluegrass instrumentation and spontaneity in the strictures of modern classical.” Whatever you call their music, their live shows are an impressive display of mastery in song and instrument.
The special Japanese edition of their new album, “The Phosphorescent Blues,” was released on July 20.
