In Japan the concept and system for adopting children are not widely understood. There are approximately 40,000 children here who cannot be raised by their biological parents and are placed in “protective care,” and roughly 85% of these children live in institutions. The Nippon Foundation’s “Happy Yurikago Project” is determined to reduce these numbers. They have designated April 4 as Adopted Children’s Day (a play on the date 4/4—which can be pronounced yoshi in Japanese—the word for adopted child), and will hold events to promote wider awareness and a better understanding of adoption programs.
Note: The event is in Japanese only.
