Classical Japanese literature and Buddhist stories were often illustrated soon after they were written, giving rise to paintings which are considered works of arts in their own right, monogatari-e. Idemitsu Museum of Art’s current exhibition examines the relationship between the words of the stories and the pictures of the monogatari-e. In examining the paintings it’s possible to discover the connections between word and form and how the illustrations gave new life and meaning to the text.
