“Rakugo” is a traditional Japanese style of comedy and story telling, and has been one of Japan’s fine arts since the Edo Period. The performances usually involve a lone performer using only a paper fan and a small cloth as props.
This special english language performance, “English Rakugo by Shinoharu Tatekawa” has been created with Tokyo’s non-Japanese speakers in mind. Aficionados will know that “Rakugo” performances are generally conducted only in Japanese, and as a traditional art, it can be difficult for even the Japanese to appreciate.
In an attempt to combat these language barriers that stop non-Japanese people from discovering and enjoying this rich traditional art of Japan, the organisers are hoping to help more people from around the world learn about and enjoy this traditional style of comedy and storytelling.
