The uncensored, all-inclusive, two-day extravaganza of art, fashion, music, energy and movement is back: welcome to Design Festa vol. 38.

By now, the vast majority of Tokyoites are familiar with the bi-annual design mecca otherwise known as Design Festa, whether they’ve taken part as visitors or designers. That’s right, the event welcomes anyone with a desire to exhibit, and this is what makes it interesting. With equal treatment for professionals and amateurs, companies and individuals alike, Design Festa is like an organized art collective, and each booth is unique and eye-catching.

What started out back in 1994 as a modest flea market for the modern artist is now an artfully organized chaos complete with a music festival, theatre hall, performance stage, international cuisine market and exhibition grounds as an all-inclusive family that spans the entirety of Japan in a massive exhibition hall. Phew!

The Booth Area contains everything you could imagine from every kind of media: traditional and digital art, photography, music, performance art, fashion, installation, design and more. This uncensored area displays some of the most interesting pieces of art from free-thinking artists, which you can purchase on the spot.

If shopping doesn’t cut it for you, you can head over to the Theatre Hall to catch fashion shows, comedy acts, live bands, belly dancing and independent films projected on a 300-inch screen. The Show Space will be hosting live paint artists and a wide variety of acrobatics, drama, dance, song and energy. In addition, a string of food stalls will be serving international fare (including a menu especially designed for Design Festa), and live bands will be rocking out on the live stage.

The event stretches over one weekend only, so don’t miss it.
