Where: Nezu Shrine, 1-28-9 Nedu
The nearly 2000-year-old Nezu Shrine is a picturesque place to visit any time of the year but it really comes alive during late spring when the Bunkyo Azalea Festival is held in its grounds. The shrine’s sizeable garden is home to around 100 species of azalea which burst into bloom around this time. Amongst the sea of pink and purple, a winding row of bright red torii gates make for a quintessentially Japanese sight. The celebrations will include an antiques fair, food stalls, late opening hours and rare access to the shrine’s main building and the pictures and statues it contains.
