Asagaya’s annual Tanabata festival celebrates its 63rd year as the neighborhood’s lengthy shopping arcades are adorned with bright and colorful papier-mâché decorations. Local business owners and schoolchildren produce the elaborate paper sculptures hanging in front of their stores, with anime and manga characters being the most popular choice. Expect to see the likes of Doraemon, Pikachu and Hello Kitty but look out for some more obscure and ambitious creations too. Visit in the evening to enjoy the matsuri atmosphere around the station with plenty of food, drink and revellers in yukatas.
