Foreign film fans in Tokyo are often frustrated by the lack of English subtitles provided on Japanese work, limiting opportunities to catch the latest home-grown cinema. Well, for one week only, you can catch a great piece of new Japanese independent cinema with English subs attached. From writer-director Hirobumi Watanabe, And the Mud Ship Sails Away stars Kiyohiko Shibukawa, a familiar face from film and television, as lazy slacker Takashi who does his best to avoid work and commitment in dead-end Tochigi. Takashi provides a cynical commentary of Japanese society before the film journeys into the surreal.
Each screening will be followed by a talk event and Q&A. The director and star will be present every day, joined by the likes of comedian/actor Lily Franky and other guests.
